One of my goals for this year was to gain a deeper knowledge of Utah's theater companies. I don't think I've ever achieved a goal quite so thoroughly. I saw 66 plays this year -- a few of them more than once.
Yes, some of them made me want to poke my eye out with a sharp stick, and a few made me want to shout their praises from the rooftops. Most were a mixed bag; with a lot of lackluster elements and one or two very good ones.
If there's one thing I learned, it's that inspiring work can come from unexpected places -- almost every theater company did something that made me cheer for them.
Without further ado, here are the best things I saw on stage in Utah in 2009.

BEST PLAY
1 » "The Passion of Sister Dottie S. Dixon," by Pygmalion Theatre. I might be a trifle obsessed with Sister D. -- probably because I wish my own Mormon mother's attitudes toward homosexuality were as tolerant as hers. But I also think that creators Troy Williams and Charles Lynn Frost deliver damn fine writing and acting to portray Dottie's saga with the perfect blend of humor and poignancy. That makes her seem seems both real and entertaining, which positions her perfectly to be a catalyst for social change. (It's showing again on New Year's Eve as part of the Eve festival and from Jan. 17 through 19 if you want to see it for yourself.)
2 » "Treasure Island" at Hale Center Theatre. It was more than just pirates falling off a cliff into a tank of water that made this production memorable. The relationship between Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins spoke deeply about what it means to be a fully developed human being.
3 » "Stop Kiss" by Pygmalion Theatre. This exploration of a budding romantic relationship between two women excelled at balancing all the most important theatrical elements: script, acting, direction, costume design, set design, lighting and sound design.
4 »"Rabbit Hole" by Pinnacle Acting Company. Melanie Nelson and Jared Larkin were devastatingly convincing as parents who recently lost their only child in a car accident.
5 » "A Trip to Bountiful" at The Grand Theatre. This simple story of a woman who wants to get back to her hometown crept into my bones, thanks to superb acting, direction and set design.

BEST MUSICAL
1 » "A New Brain" by Dark Horse Company Theatre. I loved the novelty of a musical about a brain disorder, and the cast and crew pulled it off beautifully.
2 »"The Scarlet Pimpernel" at Hale Centre Theatre. Spectacular costumes, intriguing set design and catchy musical numbers -- plus well-developed themes about how a loss of faith in love can be restored and how we shouldn't be afraid to challenge the government? Score!
3 »"The Light in the Piazza" at Pioneer Theatre. Gorgeous singing and production values and a lush score made this magical.
4 » "Go, Dog. Go!" at Salt Lake Acting Company. With actors in brightly colored dog ears zooming around the stage on scooters, learning the difference between "over" and "under" had never been more fun.
5 »"Hello, Dolly!" at Hale Centre Theatre. It's a well-worn classic, but they got the balance right and seemed to have a fun time doing it.

BEST SPECIAL THEATRICAL EVENT
1 » Celebrating Common Ground: The Arts Community Supports Equality. With original material from Plan-B Theatre, Salt Lake Acting Company and SB Dance, plus performances by Ririe-Woodbury and Vivian's Way, this sold-out, one-night only event was a skillfully produced demonstration that Utah's arts community supported gay rights legislation.
2 » And the Banned Slammed On. Plan-B Theatre combined their annual celebration of banned works with their annual 24-hour theater festival for maximum impact.
