HCT RAISES MORE THAN $10,000 FOR HAITIAN CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (Dec. 12,2007) – Hale Centre Theatre (HCT), Utah’s premier family theatre, has presented a check for $10,615 to Healing Hands for Haiti, a Salt Lake City-based charity that provides clinical treatments, rehabilitation education and disability prevention to children in the developing country of Haiti.

The funds were raised as part of “Hope for Haiti,” an effort HCT sponsored during its run of “Once on This Island,” which is set on the Island of Haiti. HCT offered banana leaf holiday cards made by children with disabilities living in Haitian orphanages. Patrons purchased more than 17,000 of these homemade cards, with all proceeds benefiting Healing Hands for Haiti. The funds will be used by the organization to provide these children with surgeries, medical treatments, prosthetics and needed equipment such as wheelchairs.

“It is gratifying to see the generosity and support of such a great cause by our patrons,” said Sally Dietlein, HCT executive producer. “The funds will make a difference in the lives of many children whom Healing Hands is helping to lead normal and productive lives.”

HCT sponsors a community campaign which ties into its fall production each year. Past efforts have included:

  • “Operation Possible Dream,” during HCT’s production of “Man of La Mancha,” collected more than 1,000 school supplies for Operation Give, a Salt Lake-based charity which works with the Iraqi ministry of education.

  • “Read-A-Lot,” during HCT’s production of “Camelot,” collected more than 1,000 books, which were delivered by Scrooge and Tiny Tim to the Road Home Shelter and Washington Elementary School.

  • “Coats & Notes,” during HCT’s production of “Singin’ In the Rain,” collected 900 coats and blankets, which were donated to The Salvation Army.

  • “Annie’s Toy Chest,” during HCT’s production of “Annie,” collected more than 2,500 new toys and gifts, which were donated to the Utah Foster Care Foundation’s Christmas Store.

  • “Talents for Hunger,” during HCT’s production of “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” collected 7,615 pounds of food, or approximately 101 talents (a Biblical measurement of weight equal to 75.5 pounds), for the Utah Food Bank to distribute to those in need.
