HCT's "Lend Me A Tenor"

HALE CENTRE THEATRE’S “LEND ME A TENOR”
TO OPEN WITH NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION

Production to be Interrupted for Midnight Countdown and Resumed Following the Singing of “Auld Lang Syne”

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (December 2007)—Hale Centre Theatre, Utah’s premier family theatre, will kick off its 2008 theatre season with the Tony Award-winning comedy “Lend Me a Tenor” at a special New Year’s Eve performance.

The production, which runs Dec. 31, 2007 through Feb. 9, 2008, will be performed twice on opening night, 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., with the later show running into the New Year.  As the midnight hour approaches, a pre-selected audience member will interrupt the production and lead holiday revelers in a countdown and a short celebration including the singing of “Auld Lang Syne.” Following the festivities, the production will continue.

“Sharing a delightful comedy with friends and family is one of the most memorable ways to bring in the New Year,” said Sally Dietlein, executive director, Hale Centre Theatre. “The play, mixed with the anticipation of the midnight countdown, has attracted a large crowd each year since the tradition began in 1985.”

The festivities will include pre-show entertainment by band Lokalgrown, party hats, noise makers and light refreshments by The Iron Gate Grill. Tickets for the New Year’s Eve performances are $32 for the 6 p.m. show and $40 for the 10 p.m. show, with discounted upgrade pricing for 2008 season ticket holders.

The play is set in 1934 Cleveland where world-famous opera star, Tito Morelli, is primed to put Ohio on the map with his much-anticipated performance of “Othello.” Through a variety of mishaps, Morelli is believed to be dead and an aspiring singer is deceptively put in his place. When Morelli awakes and goes on stage, further sidesplitting calamity ensues.

“Lend Me a Tenor,” written by American playwright Ken Ludwig, opened on West End at the Globe Theatre in March 1986 where it was nominated for a Laurence Olivier award. The show debuted on Broadway at the Royale Theatre in March 1989, running for 476 performances and winning two Tony Awards, three Outer Critics Circle Awards and four Drama Desk Awards. The play has been produced in 25 countries and is translated into 16 languages. Other notable plays of Ludwig’s credit include “Post Mortem,” “Sullivan and Gilbert,” and “Moon over Buffalo.”

The Hale Centre Theatre production of “Lend Me a Tenor” stars Bruce Bredeson and David Stensrud as Tito Morelli; Greg Barnett and Ryan Poole as Max; and Shanna Jones and Eden Benson as Maggie.  The production is directed by Shawnda Moss.  Additional credits include: Peggy Willis, costume designer; Andrew Barrus, set and light design; Mike Williams, sound design; and Jackie Eaton, production assistant.

Nightly performances following the New Year’s Eve opening are Monday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. with the exception of Jan. 1 when the theatre will be closed for New Year’s Day. Matinee performances are each Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., with occasional weekday 4 p.m. performances. Ticket prices are Monday through Thursday and matinees, adult $19, child (5-11 years) $13; Friday and Saturday evening shows, adult $23, child (5-11 years) $14. Tickets may be purchased online at www.halecentretheatre.org, via telephone at (801) 984-9000 or at the Hale Centre Theatre box office, 3333 South Decker Lake Drive, West Valley City, Utah.
