HALE CENTRE THEATRE TO RING IN ITS 25TH SEASON WITH A COMEDIC CLASSIC, ANNUAL NEW YEAR'S EVE BASH
Dec. 31 Premier of "The Importance of Being Earnest" to Open With A Night of Festivities
WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah (Dec. 15, 2009)-Hale Centre Theatre, Utah's premier family theatre, will kick off its 25th anniversary 2010 season with the Tony Award-winning comedy, "The Importance of Being Earnest," during a special New Year's Eve performance.
The production, which runs Dec. 31, 2009 through Feb. 6, 2010, will be performed at 10 p.m. on New Year's Eve. Just before midnight, a pre-selected audience member will interrupt the show to lead holiday revelers in a countdown, the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and a short celebration before resuming the show.
The New Year's Eve festivities will include pre-show entertainment by the band Lokalgrown, party hats, noisemakers and refreshments by The Iron Gate Grill.
"New Year's Eve is the perfect time to premier a show like 'Earnest,'" said director Tamara Adams, who has worked on more than 40 HCT shows since 1989. "This classic comedy is as fun and funny today as when it originally premiered. Oscar Wilde wrote these characters into absurd situations, but they take themselves very seriously. We've focused on details like accents, posture and mannerisms so the audience can appreciate every hilarious line of the show."
First staged in 1895 at London's St. James Theatre, "The Importance of Being Earnest" is Oscar Wilde's most famous and enduring play. A romantic comedy and satirical examination of the Victorian Era, the story follows Jack, a country bachelor who uses the name Ernest Worthing while in London, and his friend Algernon, who seeks a thrill by becoming Ernest Worthing in the country. Unbeknownst to each other, both bachelors fall in love while under the false name of Ernest Worthing and must reconcile their true identity.
"The Importance of Being Earnest" is directed by Adams and stars Josh Richardson and Justin Bruse as John Worthing or Ernest; Greg Barnett and Paul Cartwright as Algernon; Linda Jean Stephenson and Tracy Callahan as Lady Bracknell; and Eden Benson and Kylee Bird as Gwendolyn. Additional credits include; Jolene Ashcraft, assisted by Brooke Wilkins, as costume designer; Kacey Udy, set design; Dan Morgan and Adam Flitton, light design; and Dan Morgan, sound design, Tammy Morgan, production assistant.
Nightly performances after the New Year's Eve celebration are Monday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and run through Feb. 6, 2010, except the evening of Jan. 1, 2010 when the theatre will be closed in observance of New Year's Day.
